So, I’m going to be a dad

We first found out about the new arrival in May. Laura had been off of birth control for around three years, and we’d begun thinking about and adjusting to the possibility that we might not have kids. She’d taken a new job a couple months before, and life was going on. Then she had a couple days when she got sick in the morning and felt fine by afternoon, and began to realize something was up. She took the test, took another just to be sure, and then took me out for dinner that night to deliver the news.

Since then, we’ve had an introductory pregnancy class, an ultrasound, and a few other medical appointments. Watching the fetus move, bounce, and stretch, and seeing its heartbeat on the screen were amazing, unforgettable moments, as was hearing its heartbeat for the first time a couple weeks later. Based on the ultrasound, the due date is set for for December 15. Laura didn’t know she was pregnant until she was almost two months along, so we still feel like we just found out and we’re nearly halfway through the pregnancy.

At our last ultrasound, it was too early to tell whether it’s a boy or a girl, which has made planning a bit more challenging, but we’ve begun gathering some of the necessary supplies thanks to gifts from family. There’s another ultrasound coming up in two weeks, and assuming kiddo cooperates, we should be able to determine the gender then. Even if we don’t have names yet, it’ll be nice to be able to use “he” or “she” instead of “it.”

Here are the pictures from the ultrasound:
