Adventures in Vinyl

Laura and I had been musing about picking up a turntable and some records for quite a while now, and on Tuesday night, somewhat on a whim, we took the plunge. I found a Technics SL-B30 belt-driven automatic turntable on Craigslist for $45. We went to meet the seller, who was playing a record on it when we arrived, and took it home. Since we don’t have any records of our own yet, we called up Laura’s parents and asked if we could borrow some of theirs.

Pat took me upstairs to their collection and I asked him to point out some of his favorites. We had a great time, and spent nearly an hour digging through their records and chatting about music. When we’d gone through their stacks, Pat had set aside a pile of records. Among the highlights were The Beatles’ Abbey Road, Kraftwerk’s Autobahn, greatest hits albums from The Beatles, Simon & Garfunkel, and Three Dog Night, and the movie soundtracks for The Lord of the Rings (the cartoon version from the late 70s/early 80s), 2001: A Space Odyssey, and Star Wars. We’ve been having a great time listening to them and are looking forward to picking up some records of our own. We’re looking for just about anything, but particularly jazz, blues, bluegrass, folk, big band, punk, rock, and metal, so if you know anyone who wants to get rid of some records, let us know!
